Besides helping equines, goats, fowl, pigs, llamas and dogs, we take in elder cats from the shelter. Many have lost their elder owners. The number of cats we care for varies-currently we care for 14 but this number can be higher. The elders reside in their own suite-heated and air conditioned-with panoramic views and classical music. They also live with two rabbits and a special needs chicken. The cats are all fed a urinary tract wet food and dry food, but mainly wet food. This food has gone from 60 cents a can to $1.80 a can and we currently feed 80 cans a week. We also feed the urinary dry food to supplement and help tooth health. We also buy a walnut based litter that is earth friendly. All of this costs around $10,000 a year, minimum, depending on number of cats and special needs.
